Heard a Loud Bang, and Now the Door Won't Open?
Garage door springs almost always go the same way. The door was working fine yesterday. Then there’s a loud crack from the garage, sometimes in the middle of the night, and the next time you hit the button the opener groans, the door lifts a few inches, and it stops.
That’s a broken spring. If you look up at the bar above the door, you’ll usually see a gap of an inch or two in the coil where it snapped.
The spring is what actually lifts your door. The opener only guides it. A two-car steel door can weigh well over 150 pounds, and with the spring gone, all of that weight is sitting on the opener and on whoever tries to lift it by hand.
- Stop using the opener. It isn’t built to lift that weight and you can strip the gear or burn out the motor.
- Don’t lift the door by hand unless you have to. If you must, get a second person, and keep your hands off the springs, cables and bottom brackets.

Why We Weigh the Door Before We Pick a Spring
This is the part a lot of companies skip, and it’s the reason so many spring jobs have to be redone.
Springs are rated for a specific door weight. Put in one that’s too weak and the door feels heavy and the opener strains. Put in one that’s too strong and the door flies up and won’t stay closed. Both wear everything else out faster.
So before we install anything, we take the tension off, weigh the door, and measure the old spring’s wire size, inside diameter and length. Then we match the new spring to your door, not to whatever happens to be on the truck. Once it’s in, we balance the door so it stays put when you let go of it halfway up.

Torsion Springs vs. Extension Springs
Torsion Springs
Most homes around Charlotte built in the last 30 years have torsion springs: one or two thick coils on a steel bar right above the door opening. They're the safer and longer-lasting setup, and they're what we replace most often.
Extension Springs
Older homes and some single-car garages still have extension springs running along each side above the tracks. Each one should have a safety cable through the middle. If yours don't, we'll recommend adding them. A snapped extension spring without that cable can go through a windshield or drywall.

Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is About to Go
Springs wear out on a schedule. A typical torsion spring is rated for around 10,000 open-and-close cycles. If your family uses the garage door as the front door, four or five trips a day, that’s roughly seven years. Here’s what it looks like before it breaks:
- The door feels heavier when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected.
- It won’t stay put halfway up. It drifts down or creeps up on its own.
- The opener strains or the door slows down near the top.
- One side rises before the other, or the door closes crooked.
- You can see a gap in the coil, or rust along the spring.
If you’re seeing any of these, it’s cheaper to deal with it now than after it snaps and takes a cable or the opener with it.
One Spring or Both?
If your door has two springs and only one broke, the other one is the same age and has done the same number of cycles. It’s usually not far behind.
We’ll show you the condition of the one that’s still holding. Replacing both at once means one trip, one service fee and a balanced door. Replacing just the broken one is cheaper today but often means another call within a year. It’s your call, and we’ll give you the price for each option before we touch anything.

We’re open Monday through Friday from 8 to 5 and Saturday from 9 to 2. Most spring replacements take under an hour once we’re there, and a lot of the spring calls that come in during the day get handled that same day.
Springs don’t always break during business hours, and Adam has helped plenty of people outside of them. Garage Door Spring Repair FAQs
How do I know my garage door spring is broken?
Look at the bar above the door. A gap in the coil means it snapped. Other signs: a loud bang from the garage, a door that only opens a few inches, an opener that hums but can’t lift, or a door that feels like it weighs a ton by hand.
Can I still use my garage door if the spring is broken?
Please don’t. The opener isn’t designed to lift the full weight of the door and you can damage it. Lifting it by hand is risky too. Leave it closed if you can and call us.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We don’t recommend it. A wound torsion spring holds enough energy to break bones, and most spring injuries happen during DIY replacements with the wrong tools. It’s one of the few home repairs we’d tell anyone to leave to a pro.
How long do garage door springs last?
A standard torsion spring is rated for about 10,000 cycles, which is roughly 7 to 10 years for most households. Heavy daily use, humidity and a lack of lubrication shorten that.
