Garage Door Stuck, Loud, or Off Track?

Most problems come down to a handful of parts

A garage door has a lot of moving parts, and they all wear out on their own schedule. Rollers get flat spots. Hinges crack. Tracks get bumped by a car or a lawn mower. A sensor gets knocked a quarter inch out of line and suddenly the door won’t close.

Most of the time, the door tells you something is wrong before it quits. It gets louder. It shakes on the way up. One side drags. It stops and reverses for no reason you can see. Those are all things we can fix, usually in one visit.

We’re a small, family-owned company, and we fix garage doors all over the Charlotte area. When we show up, we find the actual cause, show it to you, and give you the price before we start.

Stop using the door if you see this
  • The door is hanging crooked or one side is higher than the other.
  • A roller has come out of the track, or the track is bent.
  • A cable is loose or hanging off the side of the door.
  • You heard a loud bang and the door now feels very heavy.

Running the opener on a door like that can bend the panels and tracks and turn a simple repair into a bigger one. Leave it where it is and give us a call.

The Garage Door Repairs We Do Most

Rollers. Old steel rollers wear flat and rust, and cheap plastic ones crack. Either way you get a door that grinds, shakes and wears out the opener faster. Swapping worn rollers for quality ones is one of the best fixes for a loud door.

Tracks. A bent or loose track makes the door bind and can let a roller pop out. We straighten or replace the damaged section, tighten the brackets and line the tracks back up. Our guide to track repair warning signs covers what to look for.

Hinges and brackets. The hinges between each section take a beating every time the door bends over the curve. A cracked hinge lets the panels sag and rub. We replace them before they tear the panel.

Safety sensors. The two little eyes near the floor stop the door from closing on a person or a pet. When they’re dirty, loose or out of line, the door goes down and pops right back up. Sometimes all it takes is cleaning and lining them up, and if that’s all it is, that’s what we’ll tell you.

Doors off track. If the door came off its track, stop using it. We’ll get it back on safely, replace any bent parts and figure out why it happened, whether that’s a worn roller, a loose track or a cable problem.

Bent or damaged sections. A bumper tap can crease a panel and bind the whole door. Depending on the door and whether a matching section is still made, we’ll repair it, replace the section, or tell you honestly if a new door is the better spend.

Garage Door Problems We Fix

Common question

Why Is My Garage Door So Loud?

A garage door that used to be quiet doesn’t get loud for no reason. These are the usual suspects:

  • Grinding or rumbling: worn steel rollers or rollers with dry bearings.
  • Squealing: dry hinges, rollers or springs that haven’t been lubricated in years.
  • Popping or banging: a door out of balance, a loose track, or a spring under strain.
  • Rattling: loose hinges, brackets or track bolts.

Most of these are quick fixes, and a quieter door is also a door that’s easier on the opener. We go into more detail in why your garage door is noisy. If a popping sound comes from the spring, though, don’t wait on it. That spring may be close to breaking.

“My door would sometimes open after i tried to close it. Rise Up quickly adjusted the sensors and replaced the rollers on the door to smooth it out and cut down on noise.”

Five Minutes Twice a Year Saves a Lot of Repairs

Most of the repairs we do could be pushed back years with a little upkeep. Here’s what we tell customers:

  • Spray the hinges, rollers and springs with a garage door lubricant every spring and fall. Skip the WD-40; it cleans but doesn’t lubricate.
  • Pull the red release cord with the door closed and lift it by hand. It should feel light and stay put halfway up. If it’s heavy or drifts, the springs need attention.
  • Put a roll of paper towels under the door and close it. It should reverse when it touches. If it doesn’t, call us.
  • Look along the tracks for dents and loose bolts, and at the cables for fraying near the bottom brackets.

Why Charlotte Homeowners Call Rise Up for Repairs

Adam Piana started Rise Up in 2016 after his own mother got taken advantage of during a garage door spring replacement. He’d already spent decades in home services, including years as a locksmith, and he wanted a company that tells people the truth about what their door needs.

That’s still the deal. We find the real problem, show you, and price it before we start. We’re licensed, bonded and insured in North Carolina, BBB A+ rated, LiftMaster Certified and a Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite.

“He put my garage back on it’s track and fixed my bent garage without me even asking.”

Rise up was quick to respond and prompt with service. From the start Adam was kind, explained everything to me thoroughly, and was upfront about the pricing. I accidentally ran into my garage door and cracked the frame. He reinforced it in less than 30 mins and had it working like it was brand new! I am so thankful to him! They are very affordable as well and I will recommend them to all. Very happy with my service!

Adam was very responsive when I asked him to come to my home to give me an estimate. Once I decided to go with him, her was able to do the work with in a week. Repaired/finished the install on an old Genie opener that had been under for 15 year. Installed a new Liftmaster opener on the 2nd door. Replaced all the wheels on both doors. Excellent work. Reasonable prices.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Rise Up Garage Doors, and I couldn't be more satisfied with their service and the quality of the motor that was installed. From start to finish, the entire process was seamless and efficient. Adam was incredibly responsive, and quick to tend to our issue. He was punctual, professional and well prepared. He assessed the issue with my garage door swiftly and provided a clear explanation of the necessary repairs. We ended up needing a new motor as our was about 20+ years old and in bad shape to where our door wasn't opening any longer. He made sure we were fully informed about the work being done and the costs involved, which were very reasonable. The new motor is wonderful, we can barely hear the door open/close with all the key updates we needed. Overall, I highly recommend Rise Up Garage Doors for anyone in need of garage door services. Their fast, efficient, and professional approach sets them apart from the rest.

Garage Door Repair FAQs

How do I know if my garage door needs repair?

Watch and listen. A door that’s louder than it used to be, shakes, moves unevenly, reverses on its own, or feels heavy when you lift it by hand needs a look. Catching it early is almost always cheaper.

No. Leave it where it is and unplug the opener if you can. Forcing a door that’s off track can bend the panels and tracks, and the door can fall.

Most of the time it’s the safety sensors near the floor. They’re dirty, knocked out of line, or something is blocking the beam. Wipe the lenses and check that both lights are solid. If that doesn’t fix it, call us.

If the door itself is solid, repairing worn parts is usually the better value. If several sections are damaged or the door needs repairs every few months, replacement can make more sense. Our replacement page goes through how to decide.

We work on most residential garage doors and openers, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Amarr and Clopay.

It depends on the day, but a lot of repair calls get handled the same day or the next morning. We’re open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 2.
