Opener Humming, Clicking, or Doing Nothing at All?

Let's figure out what it's really telling you

An opener that acts up is one of the most common calls we get. The door goes down and comes right back up. The remote works from the driveway but not the street. The motor hums but the door doesn’t move. Or it just quits one morning when you’re already running late.

Here’s the thing most people don’t know: a lot of the time, the opener isn’t the real problem. It’s the sensors, the remote, or a door that’s out of balance and making the opener lift more than it was built for. We check the whole system first, so you don’t pay for an opener part when the door needed a spring.

We’re LiftMaster Certified and work on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and most other brands you’ll find in Charlotte garages.

What the symptom usually means
  • Door goes down, then back up: the safety sensors are dirty, loose or out of line.
  • Motor hums, door doesn’t move: a broken spring, a stripped gear, or the trolley is disconnected.
  • Remote doesn’t work, wall button does: a dead battery, a locked wall panel, or the remote lost its programming.
  • Opener clicks and nothing happens: often a failing logic board or a power problem.
  • Door stops partway: the travel limits need adjusting, or the door is binding somewhere.

How we do it

We Check the Door Before We Blame the Opener

An opener is built to guide a balanced door, not to lift dead weight. When a spring is weak or broken, the opener strains on every cycle until a gear strips or the motor gives out. Replacing the opener without fixing the door just means the new one wears out early too.

So on every opener call, we disconnect the door and lift it by hand. If it’s heavy or won’t stay halfway up, the springs need attention first. Then we look at the sensors, the wiring, the remotes and the opener itself.

Sometimes the fix is small. We’d rather tell you that than sell you something you don’t need.

“He was honest and didnt recommend anything unnecessary… all we needed was a simple cleaning of sensors.”

Should You Fix the Opener or Replace It?

Gear and wrench repair icon
Usually Worth Repairing

Sensor problems, remotes and keypads, travel and force adjustments, a worn drive gear or a bad wall button. These are normal fixes on an opener that's otherwise in good shape.

Service checklist icon
Usually Time to Replace

The opener is 15 to 20 years old, the logic board is failing, parts are hard to find, or it doesn't have modern safety sensors. Then a new opener is often the better spend, and we'll give you both prices.

Opener Problems We Fix

Three Things to Check Before You Call

Look at the sensors. There’s one on each side of the door, a few inches off the floor. If a light is blinking or off, wipe the lens and gently turn the sensor until the light goes solid. Spider webs, trash cans and bikes cause a lot of service calls.

Check the lock button. Many LiftMaster wall panels have a lock or vacation mode that blocks every remote. If the wall button works and the remotes don’t, that’s the first thing to check. Then try a fresh battery.

Check the power. Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet works. Garage outlets are often tied to a GFCI that trips in storms. Look for a reset button on an outlet in the garage, a bathroom or outside.

If none of that helps, or the motor hums but the door won’t move, stop pressing the button and call us. For LiftMaster owners, we wrote a longer LiftMaster troubleshooting guide.

Good question

How Long Do Garage Door Openers Last?

Most residential openers last somewhere around 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer on a well-balanced door that gets regular care. Past that, parts get harder to find and repairs start stacking up.

A newer opener also brings things older ones don’t have: quieter belt drives, battery backup on some models, and the option to open and check the door from your phone. If yours is old enough that it doesn’t have safety sensors at all, it’s time to replace it.

We go through the decision in more detail in garage door opener repair or replace. And if replacing is the right call, see our opener installation page.

“Adam has a great work ethic and did a great job on my garage door opener after another company just never showed up….Thanks Adam!”

Rise up was quick to respond and prompt with service. From the start Adam was kind, explained everything to me thoroughly, and was upfront about the pricing. I accidentally ran into my garage door and cracked the frame. He reinforced it in less than 30 mins and had it working like it was brand new! I am so thankful to him! They are very affordable as well and I will recommend them to all. Very happy with my service!

I recently had the pleasure of working with Rise Up Garage Doors, and I couldn't be more satisfied with their service and the quality of the motor that was installed. From start to finish, the entire process was seamless and efficient. Adam was incredibly responsive, and quick to tend to our issue. He was punctual, professional and well prepared. He assessed the issue with my garage door swiftly and provided a clear explanation of the necessary repairs. We ended up needing a new motor as our was about 20+ years old and in bad shape to where our door wasn't opening any longer. He made sure we were fully informed about the work being done and the costs involved, which were very reasonable. The new motor is wonderful, we can barely hear the door open/close with all the key updates we needed. Overall, I highly recommend Rise Up Garage Doors for anyone in need of garage door services. Their fast, efficient, and professional approach sets them apart from the rest.

Garage Door Opener Repair FAQs

Why does my garage door go back up when I try to close it?

Nine times out of ten it’s the safety sensors. Check that both sensor lights are solid, wipe the lenses, and move anything near the beam. If the lights still blink, the sensors may be loose, out of line or failing.

Often a broken spring, a stripped gear inside the opener, or the door is disconnected from the trolley. Stop pressing the button so you don’t burn out the motor, and call us.

We work on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and most other residential openers. We’re LiftMaster Certified.

If it’s a simple fix like sensors, a remote or a gear kit, usually yes. If it’s 15 to 20 years old with a failing board, or it has no safety sensors, replacing it usually makes more sense. We’ll give you both prices.

Yes. We can reprogram existing remotes and keypads or set up new ones, and connect myQ-capable openers so you can use your phone.
