Plenty of companies will sell you a new garage door the minute you call about a problem. We’d rather tell you the truth. A lot of doors that look tired just need springs, rollers or an adjustment, and they’ll run fine for years.
Other doors really are done. The panels are cracked or rotted, the door has been hit, or you’re calling for a repair every few months. At that point every repair is money spent on a door you’re going to replace anyway.

When Replacing the Door Makes More Sense
Here’s what we look at when we’re deciding whether to recommend a repair or a new door:
- Damaged or rotted sections. A cracked panel, a section bent by a car, or wood rotting along the bottom. If a matching section isn’t made anymore, the whole door often has to go.
- Repeated repairs. If you’ve paid for springs, cables and an opener fix in the last couple of years, the repair bills add up fast.
- Age. Doors original to a 25 or 30 year old house are often thin, uninsulated, and wearing out at every hinge and roller.
- It’s heavy and loud. Old single-layer steel and solid wood doors are heavy on the springs and opener and noisy every time they move.
- Safety. Doors with no safety sensors, or that have come out of the tracks, need serious attention.
- You’re selling the house. A garage door is a big part of what buyers see from the street, and a worn one drags down a first impression.
If your door has one or two of these, a repair may still be the smart move. Three or more, and replacement usually wins.

What Happens to the Old Door
Taking the old door down is part of the job. We release the spring tension safely, take down the sections, tracks and old hardware, and check the framing around the opening. If the wood around the opening is rotted, we’ll show you before we go further.
Then the new door goes in with new tracks, rollers and springs sized for its weight. We connect it to your opener, or a new one, balance it, set the limits and test the safety reverse. We’ll go over removal and cleanup when we quote the job, so there are no surprises.
Many replacements are done in one visit. If your new door is a special order, we’ll give you the timeline up front.

Should I repair or replace my garage door?
If the problem is springs, cables, rollers or the opener, a repair usually makes sense. If sections are cracked, rotted or bent, the door is very old, or you’re paying for repairs every few months, replacement is often the better value. We’ll give you both prices.
Can you replace just one section of my door?
Sometimes, if the manufacturer still makes a matching section for your door. On older doors it often isn’t available, and then replacing the door is the only clean option.
How long does a garage door replacement take?
Many replacements are done in one visit. Special order doors take longer to arrive, and we’ll give you the timeline when you order.
Do I need a new opener when I replace the door?
Not always. If your opener is in good shape, we can connect the new door to it. If it’s old or loud, doing both at once saves a second visit.
Will a new garage door help if I'm selling my house?
It’s one of the most visible updates you can make from the street. One of our customers replaced two doors on a family home before selling and was glad they did.
Is it worth replacing an old wood garage door?
Usually, once the bottom sections start to rot or the door gets hard to lift. Wood doors are heavy and need regular painting or staining. A woodgrain steel door gives you a similar look, weighs less and needs far less upkeep.
