Short answer: Stop using the door. A garage door lift cable works under the tension of the spring system, and when one snaps the door loses support on that side, goes crooked, and can come off its track or drop. Do not operate the opener, do not try to force the door, and do not attempt to reattach the cable. Park outside, keep people and pets clear, and get a technician out. Cables are replaced in pairs, and the spring balance gets checked at the same time.
You heard a bang from the garage. Now the door sits at an angle, one side lower than the other, and it will not go up properly.
That is almost always a broken lift cable, and the most useful thing to know is what not to do next.
What the cable actually does
Your garage door is heavy. The springs carry that weight, and the cables are what transfer the spring’s effort down to the door itself. One cable runs down each side, from a drum at the top to a bracket at the bottom corner of the door.
So the cable is not a minor accessory. It is a load-bearing part of a system holding up a couple of hundred pounds, and it is under tension whenever the door is not fully open.
When one snaps, that side loses its support. The other cable is still doing its job, so the door lifts unevenly, twists in the tracks, and binds. That is why the symptom is a crooked door rather than a door that simply stops.
What to do right now
- Stop using the door. Do not press the remote again to see if it works. Every cycle risks pulling it further off track or dropping it
- Do not force it by hand. With a broken cable the door is no longer properly supported, and manually lifting can let it slam down
- If the door is open, leave it open. Do not try to bring it down. A door held up by one cable can come down hard
- Move the cars out, if you can do it safely without operating the door
- Keep children and pets out of the garage until it is fixed
- Do not pull the emergency release while the door is open. That release disconnects the opener, and on an unbalanced door it removes the last thing holding it. Only use it with the door already fully closed
- Call someone. This is a same-day job, not a wait-until-the-weekend one
Why not just fix it yourself
Because the cable is not the dangerous part. What the cable is attached to is.
The bottom bracket at the corner of the door, where the cable anchors, is under the full tension of the spring system. That bracket is a well-known injury point in this trade. Loosening it with tension still in the system can release that energy suddenly.
And at the top, the cable winds onto a drum on the same shaft as the torsion spring. Working near that shaft without the spring properly wound down is how people end up in an emergency room.
There is a reason this is one of the few household repairs almost every professional will tell you to leave alone. It is not that the part is expensive. It is that the stored energy in the system does not care how careful you are being.
Why cables break
Rust and fraying. The most common cause here. Cables are steel, garages are humid, and Charlotte-area summers are humid for months. Moisture works into the strands, they corrode, individual wires start to break, and eventually there is not enough cable left. This is gradual and visible if anyone is looking.
Misalignment. If the door is slightly out of alignment or the cable is not seated properly on its drum, it rubs where it should not. Rubbing wears the strands.
Bad drum winding. A cable that has come loose and re-wound unevenly on the drum wears fast and can jump off entirely.
Age. Cables are a wear part. On a door cycled several times a day for fifteen years, they have flexed over their drums tens of thousands of times.

Something struck the door. A vehicle bump can bend a track or bottom bracket, which then chews through a cable over the following months.

- Visible fraying. Look at the cables running down each side. Broken individual strands sticking out are the clearest possible warning
- Rust or discoloration on the cable
- The door judders or catches at the same point each time
- The door sits slightly uneven when closed, one corner a little higher than the other
- Slack cable on one side while the door is closed
- New noises, particularly a scraping or grinding around the top corners
Any of those is worth acting on before it becomes an emergency. A worn cable spotted on a Tuesday is a straightforward job. A snapped one on a Saturday morning with your car trapped inside is not.
What a proper repair involves
Both cables get replaced, not just the broken one. They are the same age, they have done the same number of cycles, and they have lived in the same humidity. Replacing one and leaving the other is how you end up doing this twice.
Beyond the cables themselves, the job should include:
- Winding down the spring tension safely before anything is disconnected
- Checking the drums for wear and grooving, since a chewed drum will destroy a new cable
- Inspecting the bottom brackets for damage or corrosion
- Getting the door back on track if it has come off, and checking the tracks and rollers for damage from the incident
- Re-checking the spring balance, because if a spring is fatigued the new cables will be working harder than they should
- Testing the safety reverse on the opener afterwards
That last one matters. If the door came off track, the opener may have been straining, and its safety settings want re-checking before the door is trusted again.
