Short answer: Repair the opener when the failure is a wearing part on an otherwise sound unit: a gear kit, a capacitor, a limit switch, a remote, or a safety sensor. Replace it when the logic board has failed on an older unit, when the motor is going, when parts are no longer available, or when it predates 1993 and has no photo-eye safety sensors. Age alone is the clearest signal. Under about ten years, repair is usually right. Past fifteen, you are often paying to postpone.
A garage door opener is the most-used motor in most homes. It runs several times a day, in an unconditioned space, for fifteen or twenty years. When it finally acts up, the useful question is not “can this be fixed,” because almost anything can. It is whether fixing it is the better spend.
What usually breaks, and whether it is worth fixing
Gears, and the plastic ones in particular
On chain and screw drive units, a nylon gear inside the motor housing does the hard work and eventually strips. The tell is a motor that runs and hums normally while the door does not move.
Usually repair. A gear kit is one of the most common and most sensible opener repairs, provided the rest of the unit is healthy.
Capacitor
The capacitor gives the motor the jolt it needs to start. When it weakens, the opener hums, struggles, or does nothing.
Usually repair. Small part, straightforward job.
Safety sensors, the photo eyes
The two small units near the floor on either side of the door. They stop and reverse the door if anything breaks the beam. When they drift out of alignment, get bumped, or fill with cobwebs, the door refuses to close and the opener light blinks at you.
Repair, and often it is just realignment. This is the single most common “my opener is broken” call that turns out not to be a broken opener.
Limit and travel settings
The opener needs to know where fully open and fully closed are. When those settings drift, the door stops short, or hits the floor and bounces back up.
Repair. An adjustment, not a part.
Remotes and keypads
Batteries, then reprogramming, then the receiver.

Logic board
The circuit board that runs everything. Boards fail from age, heat cycling, and power surges, and North Carolina summer storms do not help.
This is the fork in the road. On a newer opener, replacing the board is reasonable. On a unit past twelve or fifteen years, a board often costs enough that you are putting serious money into a machine whose motor is also near the end. That is usually the point to replace.
Motor
Replace. If the motor itself is failing on an older opener, the unit is telling you it is done.
The safety question that overrides everything
If your opener does not have photo-eye safety sensors near the floor, replace it. Not eventually, now.
Federal safety requirements introduced in 1993 mean openers manufactured from that year carry an external entrapment protection system, in practice the photo eyes. An opener without them relies solely on the door reversing when it contacts an obstruction, which is not adequate protection for a child or a pet.
If you look along the bottom of your door tracks and there are no small sensors at roughly ankle height, your opener is more than thirty years old. There is no repair conversation to have. That is a replacement, and it is the one case where we will say so plainly regardless of what the unit is doing.
The security question people miss
Openers made before roughly the mid-1990s use a fixed code. The remote sends the same signal every time, and that signal can be captured and replayed.
Modern openers use a rolling code that changes with every press. If your opener has DIP switches inside the remote or on the motor unit, little rows of tiny sliding switches, that is a fixed-code unit and it is a genuine security weakness on a door into your house.
This does not usually come up until someone mentions it, and it is worth knowing before you spend money repairing an opener from that era.

The one everybody gets backwards
A surprising share of “the opener is broken” calls are not the opener.
If the door is heavy, binding, or off balance, the opener is being asked to lift weight it was never meant to carry. Openers are sized to move a door that is already balanced by its springs, not to do the lifting themselves. A door with a broken spring can weigh well over a hundred pounds at the bottom.
So an opener that strains, stops partway, or has burned out a gear early is often the victim rather than the culprit. The honest diagnosis checks the door balance before condemning the motor.
The quick version: with the opener disconnected by pulling the emergency release, lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go. A balanced door mostly stays put. One that slams down or shoots up has a spring problem, and that is garage door spring repair rather than opener work.
Do not attempt spring work yourself. Torsion springs hold enormous stored energy and cause serious injuries every year.
If you are replacing, what actually matters
- Drive type. Belt drive is noticeably quieter than chain, which matters if there is a bedroom over or beside the garage. Chain is cheaper and perfectly durable
- DC versus AC motor. DC units are quieter, usually have soft start and stop, and generally allow battery backup
- Battery backup. In North Carolina, where summer storms take power out, this is the feature people are most glad they paid for. Some states now require it on new installs; regardless, being unable to get a car out during an outage is a genuine nuisance
- Wi-Fi and app control. Useful if you want to check whether the door is closed from elsewhere, or let a delivery in
- Horsepower. Match it to the door. A heavy insulated or wood door needs more than a light single panel door

Frequently asked questions
How long does a garage door opener last?
Typically ten to fifteen years, with some going longer. Usage matters more than age alone, since a door cycled six times a day wears faster than one used twice. Past fifteen years, most failures are worth answering with a replacement rather than a repair.
Why does my garage door open but not close?
Nearly always the safety sensors. Something is blocking the beam, they have drifted out of alignment, or a lens is dirty. The opener light usually blinks a code when this happens. It is the most common opener complaint and often the easiest to resolve.
Is it worth repairing a 15 year old garage door opener?
Usually only if the failure is a small wearing part. If the logic board or motor has gone at that age, the sensible move is replacement, because the remaining components are all near the end of their service life too and you would be paying twice.
My opener hums but the door does not move. What is that?
Most often a stripped drive gear, or a failed capacitor. It can also mean the door is jammed or a spring has broken, so the opener physically cannot lift it. Worth checking the door balance before assuming the opener is at fault.
Do I need to replace my opener if it has no sensors?
Yes. Openers without photo-eye safety sensors predate the 1993 federal requirement, making them well over thirty years old and lacking modern entrapment protection. That is a safety replacement rather than a repair decision.
Can I just replace the remote instead of the opener?
Often yes. Universal remotes work with many units, and reprogramming is straightforward. The exception is very old fixed-code openers, where finding a compatible remote gets difficult and the security weakness makes replacement the better answer anyway.
