Your garage door cables are braided steel, and together with the springs they carry the full weight of the door every time it moves. They don’t last forever. Moisture rusts them, the bottom brackets rub them, and years of winding on and off the drums wear the strands thin.
A cable that’s starting to fray is a cable that’s going to snap, usually at the worst time. When one does, that side of the door drops, the door twists in the tracks, and the other cable takes all the load.
Cable replacement is a job for a pro because the cables are tied into the spring tension. We replace them safely, set both sides evenly and leave you with a door that’s balanced and level. If your cable only came off the drum and isn’t damaged, it may just need a repair instead.
- Broken strands sticking out, especially near the bottom corners of the door.

Why We Replace Both Cables, Not Just One

There’s a balance reason too. A new cable and an old, stretched one won’t wind onto the drums the same way, so the door can sit crooked or pull to one side. Replacing both keeps the door level and means you aren’t calling us back for the other side in a few months.

What's Involved in Replacing a Garage Door Cable
People are sometimes surprised a cable replacement isn’t a five-minute job. Here’s what actually happens:
- We lock the door in place with clamps on the tracks so it can’t move while we work.
- We unwind the springs. The cables are under spring tension, so the tension has to come off first. This is the dangerous part, and it’s why we tell people not to try it.
- We remove the old cables from the drums and the bottom brackets, and check the brackets and drums for wear.
- We install new cables sized for your door and seat them evenly on both drums.
- We re-wind the springs to the right number of turns, level the door, and balance it.
- We test everything: the door by hand, the opener, and the safety reverse.

How Long Garage Door Cables Last, and How to Help Them
There’s no set expiration date on a cable. In a dry garage on a well-balanced door, cables often outlast the first set of springs. In a damp garage, or on a door where the springs are worn, they can rust and fray much sooner. Humid Carolina summers don’t help.
A few habits go a long way:
- Twice a year, look at both cables near the bottom brackets. That’s where fraying and rust start.
- Keep the area under the door clear. A door that lands on a bike or a trash can is the most common way a cable goes slack and gets damaged.
- Pay attention to balance. If the door feels heavy when you lift it by hand, the springs are weak, and the cables are carrying load they shouldn’t.
- Don’t oil the cables. Lubricate the rollers, hinges and springs, but leave the cables dry so they don’t collect grit.

How do I know if my garage door cable needs replacing?
Look near the bottom corners of the door. Broken strands, rust, kinks or flat spots mean the cable is wearing out. If it already snapped, the door will usually hang crooked.
Can I use my garage door with a frayed cable?
We wouldn’t. A frayed cable can snap without warning, and the door can drop on one side. Keep using it as little as possible and call us.
Should both cables be replaced at the same time?
Yes, in almost every case. They’re the same age and carry the same load, and replacing both keeps the door level.
Can I replace a garage door cable myself?
Please don’t. The cables are under spring tension, and the springs have to be unwound before the cables come off. That’s where most garage door injuries happen.
